Can you fill these Boots?
Greenwood VFD is recruiting volunteer personnel for weekday coverage. Since most of our firefighters hold jobs in the Weatherford area or in the Metroplex, our most difficult period of coverage is Monday through Friday during the daytime.
- If you are retired and looking for something worthwhile as well as fun, firefighting may be for you. Across the nation, retirees are an important part of the fire service. Many of our jobs can be handled by senior citizens…remember not all firefighters need to go into burning buildings.
- If you are a career firefighter who lives in the Greenwood Fire District, how about applying your skills in your hometown area, as a volunteer. Firefighters generally work 24 hrs on and 48 hrs off. Two days out of three they might be available to volunteer. We currently have career firefighters from four paid departments (Kent Carter from North Richland Hills FD, Josh Clark from Fort Worth FD, Louis Ramos from Hudson Oaks FD and Mike Ellis, Lieutenant with Weatherford FD) who volunteer with us. We could use more!
- If you are working nearby and are available to leave your job for a few hours a month, please talk to us. Some employers who are in our fire district will allow their employees to fight fires using complementary time.
- Are you interested in an exhilarating and interesting avocation which will challenge you to the limit? Are you interested in becoming more involved in your community? There isn’t a better way to get involved and help your neighbors than by joining the fire service!
For more information about joining our department, call Fire Chief John Burgoyne at (817) 613-1403 or Assistant Chief Chuck Tingle at (817) 614-8452. We have an excellent training program and will provide the best available equipment to you. We also have a generous insurance package. Our Fire district continues to grow dramatically and we really need more help! We are especially interested in Spanish speaking firefighting candidates. Because IH-20 is an international gateway, we are working more and more accidents involving Spanish speaking victims. We could use your help in communicating with the victims and helping gather vital accident related information.
Join Our Auxiliary? Maybe you would like to help but don’t think that firefighting is for you? Well, we have a growing auxiliary organization that supports our firefighting and emergency medical team. They assist with our fundraiser activities. They help in the office – we have a lot of mandated federal, state and county reporting to do. They help us inventory equipment – we have a very large inventory of firefighting equipment. They also help when we have a major emergency by bringing food and beverages to our firefighters. They can help with filing our income taxes. They help keep the station clean and keep our trucks looking good. We have even had some auxiliary personnel that have helped with vehicle maintenance. Whatever your skills and interests – there is a place for you. It’s a great way to get involved in your community and help in a very meaningful way! If you are interested in joining our auxiliary, call Ben Meche at (480) 205-6524 or Nancy Burgoyne at (817) 371-9358.
Want to be a Junior Firefighter? If you are 16 to 18 years old, you can join our Junior Firefighter program. We provide training and equipment and you can “try us on” to see if you would like to be a firefighter after highschool. You can’t go on firecalls other than in a support role….but there are lots of things that you can learn. You will get to join a great team and work with some of the best firefighters in the area. There are lots of cool things that you can do to help us. Junior Firefighters help keep the trucks clean, help with station chores and train right along with our firefighters.
